Description
Asparagus Mary Washington (Asparagus officinalis) is a fantastic choice for any garden! This variety is one of the oldest and most popular for good reason. It grows quickly and is super hardy, producing delicious, tender spears that are dark green with a lovely purple tinge. Plus, it’s pretty resistant to rust, making it a great option for those who prefer organic gardening.
Asparagus seeds do not require any treatment (eg soaking, stratification) before sowing.
Asparagus seeds can be sown directly into the garden OR seedlings can be raised in trays or other containers and transplanted to the garden once established.
Sow seeds 10mm deep. Keep soil moist but never wet or dry. Seeds should germinate in around 14-21 days at a soil temperature of 23-27°C. Transplant seedlings to the garden once they have their first true leaves and are large enough to handle (usually 5-10cm tall)
You can start harvesting your asparagus spears from October to November. After November, it’s best to let the spears grow into ferns, which helps the plants get stronger and ready for the next year. To ensure your plants develop a robust root system, wait at least 18 months before doing your first light harvest—just pick a few of the plumpest spears and let the others grow for a bit longer. Asparagus loves sunshine, but it can also do well in gently shaded spots. Be sure to plant the crowns in a well-prepared and fertilized bed for the best results in those early years. And don’t forget to give them some love with regular winter topdressing to keep your plants productive for many seasons to come!
