Description
Mongolian milkvetch (Astragalus ) is an important herb in traditional Chinese and Mongolian medicine, known for its numerous health benefits. It is mainly utilized for its ability to boost the immune system and strengthen the body’s defenses against infections and viral diseases. This herb is recognized as an adaptogen, helping the body cope with stress and enhancing resilience. It is commonly employed to support heart health. The root extract has demonstrated protective effects on kidney cells under oxidative stress conditions, indicating potential advantages for kidney-related issues. Additional benefits reported include anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, support for liver health, and possible anti-diabetic effects attributed to its polysaccharides, saponins, and flavonoids content. It is also used as a tonic to enhance physical strength, stimulate appetite, and assist in recovery from illness or surgery.
Under ideal conditions, Mongolian milkvetch seeds generally sprout within a timeframe of 7 to 14 days. However, germination can be unpredictable and may extend to 30–90 days following a phase of cold stratification. To enhance the chances of successful sprouting, seeds frequently need scarification, which can involve gently nicking the seed coat or soaking them in hot water for 24 hours to interrupt dormancy. A typical approach includes a cold stratification stage lasting 4–6 weeks in a refrigerator set at 4°C, preceded by a 4-week warm period at room temperature. This process is effective in overcoming phytohormonal dormancy. For optimal germination, the preferred soil temperature falls between 15–20°C. Nonetheless, seeds can still germinate outside this range, albeit with lower rates or slower emergence.
Mongolian Milkvetch is a hardy perennial herb with small, oval-shaped leaves and a thick, yellow-brown root. Flowers are yellow-white, pea-like, bloom in summer, and will appear in the second year. Harvesting of roots is recommended in the 3rd or 4th year.
