Description
Borage (Borago officinalis) is a wonderful and resilient annual herb that’s super easy to grow in many different Australian climates. This charming plant features tasty, cucumber-flavored leaves and eye-catching blue, star-shaped flowers that are sure to brighten up your garden! Borage loves to soak up the sun but also does well in partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil that’s rich in nutrients, although it can adapt to less-than-perfect soil as long as it isn’t too soggy. If you’re in a temperate region, you can sow your seeds from spring to autumn. For those in subtropical and tropical areas, the best time to plant is from September to May.
When you’re ready to plant, simply sow the seeds directly where you want them to grow, at a depth of 1 to 1.5 cm. They’ll start to sprout within 5 to 14 days, especially when the temperature is between 18 and 24°C. For a thriving display, plant them in groups; they’ll support each other beautifully! If you’re worried about them spreading too much, using pots can help keep them in check. One of the best things about borage is that it’s a magnet for pollinators, particularly bees! Plus, it makes a fantastic companion plant for tomatoes, strawberries, and other brassicas, as it helps keep pesky insects like tomato hornworms at bay. Borage can grow to about 60 to 100 cm tall and will often surprise you by returning each season thanks to its tendency to self-seed.
